There are 2 versions of this sweet little hat & mittens ~ choose your favourite :)
 
Marty Hat & Mittens ~ Version 1


Marty Hat & Mittens ~ Version 2

Requirements:
2 DK yarns in complementary colours or tones – one self-coloured & one short colour change (or self-patterning)
 
You will need around 28g in total for a hat & mittens set
 
4mm needles (or 4.5mm if you are a tight knitter)
 
 
Size:
 
Large Premature/ Small Newborn
 
Hat:  
 

Width:         11" (28cm) all around  

 
Height:        5" (13cm) 

 
Mittens:

 

Width:          3½" (9cm) all around 


Length:         3¼" (8.5cm)


0 - 3 months
 

Hat:            

 
Width:         12" (31cm) all around  


Height:        5½" (14cm)

 

Mittens:
 

Width:         5" (13cm) all around 

Length:         4½" (11.5cm)



Top Tips:
 
·        It does not matter which yarn you start with

 

·        Do NOT cut off the yarn after using it – just carry it up the side of the knitting
 

 

 

 

 VERSION 1
 


 

Marty Hat           Large Premature / Small Newborn


Using yarn A, cast on 57sts

 

1st Row:         K1, * k1, p1, repeat from *to last 2sts, k2
 
2nd Row:        S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end

Change to yarn B (do not cut off yarn A)

3rd Row:        Knit to end

4th Row:        S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end

 
**    Change to yarn A
 
5th Row:        Knit to end

6th Row:        S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end  

 
Change to yarn B

7th Row:        Knit to end
 
8th Row:        S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end   **
 
Repeat from ** to ** seven times more

 
(You should now have worked 36rows, and the length of knitting should be around 4½“ – add 2 or 4 more rows if required )
 
Continue alternating the 2 yarns every 2 rows

Shape Top ~

Next Row:      K2, * k2tog, k2, repeat from * to last 3sts, k2tog, k1        (43sts)
 
Next Row:      S1, * p2tog to end                                                         (22sts)
 
Next Row:      K1, * k2tog to last st, k1                                                (12sts)
 
Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1
 
Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’.
 
With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure
 
Sew up side seam and darn away ends.
 
 
 
Marty Mittens           Large Premature / Small Newborn
 

Make two mittens the same

 

Using yarn A, cast on 21sts

 

1stRow:       Knit to end

 
2nd Row:       S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end

Change to yarn B (do not cut off yarn A)
 
3rd Row:       Knit to end
 
4th Row:       S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end
 
These 4 rows form the pattern
 
Repeat these 4 rows 4 times more
 
Using yarn A
 
21stRow:     Knit to end
 
22nd Row:     S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end
 
Shape the top ~
 
Using yarn B
 
Next Row:    *K2tog, k1, repeat from * to end                   (14sts)

Next Row:    P2tog all across row                                       (7sts)

Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’.
With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining stitches and secure
Sew up side seam and weave in ends

Using yarn A, cast on 65sts

1st Row:         K1, * k1, p1, repeat from *to last 2sts, k2

 

2nd Row:        S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end


 

**    Change to yarn B  (do not cut off yarn A)
 
3rd Row:        Knit to end
 
4th Row:        S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end
 
 
Change to yarn A
 
5th Row:        Knit to end
 
6th Row:        S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end      **

 
Repeat from ** nine times more
 
(You should now have worked 42rows, and the length of knitting should be around 5¼“ – add 2 or 4 more rows if required)
 
Continue alternating the 2 yarns every 2 rows

4th Row:       S1, * p1, k1, repeat from * to end
 
These 4 rows form the pattern
 
Repeat these 4 rows 7 times more
 
 
Shape the top ~
 
Using yarn A
 
Next Row:    K1, *K2tog, k1, repeat from * to end            (17sts)

Next Row:    S1, p2tog all across row                                 (9sts)

Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’.
With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining stitches and secure
Sew up side seam and weave in ends

 


 VERSION 2

Using yarn A, cast on 57sts
