Sweet Heart Baby Hat & Mittens





Sweet Heart Baby Hat              large premature baby / small newborn

 

Size: 

Width:              5¼“ (13.5cm),    10½“ all around

Height:             5“ (13cm)

 

Requires:

DK yarn ~ around 10g, in 2 colours that look good together

4mm needles



Pattern:  

Using 4mm needles and colour A, cast on 55sts

1st Row:           S1, * k1, p1, rep from * to last st, k1

2nd Row:          S1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end

Repeat the last 2 rows 3 times more, increasing one stitch at each end of last row     (57sts)  

Do not cut off yarn A

Join in colour B

Using colour B ~

9th Row:           Knit across row

10th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

11th Row:         Knit across row – knitting one stitch in colour A and one stitch in colour B all across the row

Using colour B ~

12th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

13th Row:         Knit across row

Cut off colour B, and continue in colour A only ~

14th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

15th Row:         Knit across row

16th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows five times more

 

Shape the top

Row 1:   * K5, k2tog, repeat from * last st, k1                                    (49sts)

Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10:   Purl across row

Row 3:   * K4, k2tog, repeat from * to last s, k1                                 (41sts)  

Row 5:   * K3, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                (33sts)

Row 7:   * K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                (25sts)

Row 9:   * K1, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                (17sts)

Row 11:  * K2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                     (9sts)

Row 12:   * P2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                    (5sts)

 

Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’ to use for sewing up

With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure

 

Sew up side seam and darn away ends.

Using 4mm needles and colour A, cast on 23sts

1st Row:           S1, * k1, p1, rep from * to last st, k1

2nd Row:          S1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end

Repeat the last 2 rows 3 times more, increasing one stitch at each end of last row    (25sts)   

Do not cut off yarn A

Join in colour B

Using colour B ~

9th Row:           Knit across row

10th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

11th Row:         Knit across row – knitting one stitch in colour A and one stitch in colour B, all across the row

Using colour B ~

12th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

13th Row:         Knit across row

Cut off colour B, and continue in colour A only ~

14th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

15th Row:         Knit across row

16th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows five times more

 

Shape the top ~        

Next Row:       K1, *k2tog, k1, repeat from * to end                                                   (17sts)

Next Row:       S1, purl to last st, k1

Next Row:       Knit to end

Next Row:       *P2tog all across row, p1                                                                   (9sts)

Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’.

With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining stitches and secure

 

Sew up side seam and darn away ends

Repeat the last 2 rows 4 times more, increasing one stitch at each end of the last row (65sts)                          

Do not cut off yarn A

Join in colour B

Using colour B ~

11th Row:           Knit across row

12th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

13th Row:         Knit across row – knitting one stitch in colour A and one stitch in colour B all across the row

Using colour B ~

14th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

15th Row:         Knit across row

Cut off colour B, and continue in colour A only ~

16th Row:         S1, p2tog, purl to last st, k1                                                   64sts

17th Row:         Knit across row

18th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows six times more

 

Shape the top ~

Row 1:             * K5, k2tog, repeat from * last st, k1                                      55sts

Rows 2, 4, 6, 8 & 10:              Purl across row

Row 3:             * K4, k2tog, repeat from * to last s, k1                                   46sts  

Row 5:             * K3, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                  37sts

Row 7:             * K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                 28sts

Row 9:             * K1, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                 19sts

Row 11:           * K2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1                                        10sts

Row 12:              P2tog across the row                                                           5sts

 

Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’ to use for sewing up

With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure

Sew up side seam and darn away ends.

Requires:

DK yarn ~ around 12g, in 2 colours that look good together

4mm needles

 

Pattern:           Make two mittens the same

Do not cut off each yarn after knitting a stripe – just carry it loosely up the side

 

Using 4mm needles and colour A, cast on 25sts

1st Row:           S1, * k1, p1, rep from * to last st, k1

2nd Row:          S1, * p1, k1, rep from * to end

Repeat the last 2 rows 4 times more, increasing one stitch at each end of the last row (27sts)                          

Do not cut off yarn A

Join in colour B

Using colour B ~

11th Row:           Knit across row

12th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

13th Row:         Knit across row – knitting one stitch in colour A and one stitch in colour B all across the row

Using colour B ~

14th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

15th Row:         Knit across row

Cut off colour B, and continue in colour A only ~

16th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1                                                 

17th Row:         Knit across row

18th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows six times more

 

Shape the top ~

Cast off purlwise

Do not cut off yarn A

Join in colour B

Using colour B ~

11th Row:           Knit across row

12th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

13th Row:         Knit across row – knitting one stitch in colour A and one stitch in colour B, all across the row

Using colour B ~

14th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

15th Row:         Knit across row

Cut off colour B, and continue in colour A only ~

16th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

17th Row:         Knit across row

18th Row:         S1, purl to last st, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows nine times more

 

Shape the top ~

Row 1:             * K5, k2tog, rep from * to last st, k1                                      (61sts)

15th Row:         Knit across row
