Corner to Corner Knitting

'Corner to Corner' knitting is a traditional age-old method -  still popular today, perhaps because it is so easy.

You can make a corner to corner washcloth in cotton yarn if you would like a quick project.

Corner to Corner Knitting

Or make a corner to corner blanket as big as you would like.
You may need long straight needles for this, or work backwards and forwards on a long circular needle.

Corner to Corner Garter Stitch Knitting

Cast on 2sts

Row 1:       Kfb, k1
Row 2:       K1, kfb, knit to end
Repeat Row 2 until you are happy with the size
Next Row: K2, k2tog, knit to end
Repeat the last row until you have 4sts left on your needle
Next Row:  K2tog, k2tog
Pass the first stitch over the second stitch
Cut the yarn and pull it through the loop to fasten off

Corner to Corner Knitting with a Lacy Edge

Cast on 3sts
Row 1:       Knit
Row 2:       K1, kfb, k1
Row 3:       K1, kfb, k2
Row 4:       K2, yon, knit to end
Repeat Row 4 until you are happy with the size
Next Row:  K1, k2tog, yon, k2tog, knit to end
Repeat the last row until you have 5sts left on your needle
Next Row:  K1, s1, k1, psso,k1
Next Row:  S1, k2tog, psso
Cut the yarn and pull it through the loop to fasten off

How to measure a corner to corner item

5” squares are ideal for bonding squares ~ (make 2)
10” square in cottonyarn is ideal for a washcloth
16” square is ideal for a premature baby blanket, and this can be made using one 100g ball of acrylic yarn

Top Tip: If you are making a blanket ~ Count the number of balls you have of the yarn you want to use (or note the total number of grams). Increase until you have used half of this amount - then it is time to decrease. This ensures you will not run out of yarn for your project😊

Please Note: Because knitted stitches are longer than they are wide - this means that when you use this method you may find that your knitting is more 'kite' or 'rhombus' shape than 'square' shape.  This affects some knitters much more than others. If it is a problem for you - you may find that it helps to pull the piece into a more square shape - pin it out, cover it with a damp tea towel or cloth, and leave it to dry (this is a form of blocking).

It is easy to see why this is also sometimes called diagonal or bias knitting.

Cast off knitwise loosely – use a larger size needle, or a stretchy cast off

Sew seam along the sole
Sew back seam
Darn away ends
Fold down the cuff

To make the fringed edging ~

Cut 3” lengths of yarn – you will need 22 for each bootie

Fold a length in half and use a crochet hook to pull the loop through a cast off stitch, and then pull the ends of the length through the loop. Tie securely with a double knot. This is a little fiddly - but it gets easier with practice - and it really is worth it !

Continue around the bootie, putting one length in each cast off stitch. Trim the ends of the fringes if they are uneven.

I thought some pictures might help ~

Please meet LEVI
- the Super Easy Lovie !

LEVI - the SUPER EASY LOVIE
I hardly ever make toys as I am rubbish at the faces! This is my first attempt at a lovie. I am sure you can do far better - but here at least you have somewhere to start.

LEVI the Lovie

Requires ~

DK yarn – I used a cotton mix yarn so that this Lovie would wash easily!
A little polyester stuffing
4mm needles for the main part
3.5mm needles for the head – toys are generally knitted on a size smaller than usual needle to make a more dense fabric which prevents the stuffing showing through.

Cast on 2sts

Row 1:       Kfb, k1
Row 2:       K1, kfb, knit to end
Repeat Row 2 until you are happy with the size (I made mine 9")
Next Row: K2, k2tog, knit to end
Repeat the last row until you have 10sts left on your needle

Make the head ~

Knit 1 row
Purl 1 row

S1, kfb, knit to last 3sts, kfb, k2
Purl 1 row
Repeat the last 2 rows 6 times more                                 (24sts)

Work 14 rows in stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row)

S1, s1, k1, psso,knit to last 3sts, k2tog, k2
Purl 1 row
Repeat the last 2 rows 6 times more                                 (10sts)

Cast off

Join the sides of the head
Add features to the face

Make the Ears ~
Using a length of the yarn used for the head, create ears by sewing a line across the top of the head at each side.
Stuff the head with polyester toy filling
Sew the gap at the neck closed securely

Granny's Crochet Blanket

Granny Square Blanket with a difference

When I finish a project I save all my left over yarn - even small amounts.
Nothing is wasted in this house!

And then I crochet some easy granny squares whilst watching TV usually.
A few here - a few there ......... and sometime later ........I discover that I have enough to make a little blanket.

I have been doing this for years and I have usually made some variation or alteration each time. I love to try new things - and I am happy to try out new ideas. Sometimes I sew the squares together, sometimes I crochet them together ..... this time I decided to do a little of both and to join the squares in a different way just to be creative !

The granny squares for this blanket are quite small as it is for a baby.
I made each just 3 rounds

24 made - 40 more to go ........

Once I had enough little squares I laid them out in a pattern that looked balanced - with colours evenly distributed.

And sewed them together into strips of 8 squares

Then I crocheted all around each strip in in pretty white sparkly yarn
 - one treble crochet in every stitch

Once I had done that around all 8 strips of 8 squares, I decided to join the strips together using a contrast colour.
I chose a lovely turquoise - one of my favourite colours

I crocheted the strips together on the right side and it gave a raised line which I like the look of

4 strips joined - 4 more to add !

And to finish it off - a border of half treble crochet all around

Ta Da  ....... another project completed!

Curly Cues - Knitted

$
0
0
I have been having a bit of a play around with curly cues this week.
And asking myself what makes a great curly cue - and how long should they be - and what is a curly cue anyway ?

And this is what I discovered ~

Although knitters and crocheters refer to these as curly cues (or even curly Qs) - the name actually comes from curlicues.

A curlicue is
'a decorative curl or twist in calligraphy, architecture or in the design of an object.'

curly + cue (the cue is perhaps from French queue "tail")

If you want to add curly cues to a Baby's  Hat ~

DK yarn & 4mm needles

For a loose curly cue ~                               For a curlier curly cue ~
Loosely, but evenly, cast on 30sts                Loosely, but evenly, cast on 30sts
Kfb into every stitch across the row             Kfbf, into every stitch across the row
                                     Cast off                                                         Cast off
Darn away cast on end                                 Darn away cast on end
Coil into a spiral shape                                 Coil into a spiral shape

Make 5 curly cues
Use the cast off tails to attach them together
Attach securely to a little hat

If you want to add curly cues to a Child's Hat ~

You can make these a bit longer - 40sts instead of 30sts

Loosely, but evenly, cast on 40sts
Kfbf into every stitch across the row
                                                                                    Cast off
                                                                                    Darn away cast on end
                                                                                    Coil into a spiral shape

Kfb  = knit into the front and back of the stitch (this makes 2 stitches out of each stitch)
Kfbf = knit into the front, back and front of the stitch (this makes 3 stitches out of each  stitch - and it is fiddly - but so worth it!

Scrappy Ted

Scrappy Ted

I used a scrappy ball of DK yarn and a 3.5mm hook
Worked flat – and in double crochet throughout

Start with the first leg – 8sts wide
Work until 7cm have been worked
            Cut off the yarn
Leave this leg aside for later

Work the second leg – 8sts wide
Work until 7cm have been worked
Do Not cut off the yarn ~

Continue across first leg then second leg to join the body
Continue on these 16sts until a further 6cm have been worked

Add on a further 8sts at each side to make the arms (by making a chain at each side)
Continue on these 32sts until a further 4cm have been worked

       Work 24sts, turn,
work 16sts, turn (these 16sts form the head)
Continue on these 16sts until a further 7cm have been worked

This completes the Front of the Ted ~ continue for the Back

Continue on these 16sts until a further 7cm have been worked

Add on a further 8sts at each side to make the arms (by making a chain at each side)
Continue on these 32sts until a further 4cm have been worked

       Work 24sts, turn,
work 16sts, turn (these 16sts form the body)
Continue on these 16sts until a further 6cm have been worked
Work 8sts, turn, (these 8sts form the first leg)
Continue on these 8sts until a further 7cm have been worked
Cut off the yarn
Rejoin yarn for the second leg and work across remaining 8sts
Work until 7cm have been worked
            Cut off the yarn

Make sure that all the joining knots are on the wrong side (you can pull them through with the crochet hook)

Join the Teddy all around (right sides together) using a length of yarn and a sewing needle, leaving a gap to use for stuffing

Turn right side out

Add features to the face using a length of dark coloured yarn

Create ears by sewing a line across the top of the head at each side

Stuff the Teddy with polyester toy filling and close up the gap
