DK yarn        ~       around 9g for medium preemie,    16g for 0 – 3 months size

4mm needles

 
Gauge    22sts = 4” (10cm)


Medium Premature Baby

Width:     4.5” (11.5cm)   9” (23cm) all around 

Height:    4.5” (11.5cm)

 
Using 4mm needles & DK yarn, cast on 45sts

Border ~

Knit 6 rows OR work 6 rows in rib.  Increase one stitch at end of last row     (46sts)

Well .... once I started to write the instructions for angel baby burial gowns ..... I really had to add this ....... hope you like it -

20g – 22g 4ply yarn,   3.25mm needles

 

This sweet little Angel Gown can be fastened with either 3 tiny buttons ~ or a length of ribbon.       

If you are using the ribbon closers – omit the buttonholes from rows 3, 19 and 35              

 

Cast on 37sts

 

Rows 1 & 2       Knit

Row 3               K2, yrn, k2tog (this makes a buttonhole), knit to end

Rows 4 & 5       Knit

Add 3 tiny buttons ~ or ~ cut a length of ribbon into 4 pieces and sew 2 pieces on either side of back edges at the neck and bottom of the yoke.

Ventilator Baby Bonnet - Crochet & Knit

I just made this sweet crochet baby bonnet  - the little flap is so that babies in hospital can be scanned easily. I believe these are also known as ventilation bonnets.




The instructions were given to me - but sadly I am not really sure who wrote the pattern - and I really want to share a link so that some of you might make some too.............

So can you help ? Do you know if this pattern belongs to a designer / or a charity group ?  I tried to find the source on google and pinterest without any luck. Please leave me a comment if you can help.

I have been making these cute little hats - they are a really easy, quick project.

I often choose pastel colours for babies - but I decided to make these in bright bold colours that remind me of how much I love spring.
 
 
 
 
PrimaveraCrochet Baby Hat            0 -3 months
Requirements:
DK yarn
4mm crochet hook
 
Pattern:
This pattern is written in UK terminology      
tc = treble crochet        dc = double crochet   ch = chain
 
Worked in the round
 
Chain 3, join with a slip stitch into a ring
Round 1:   Ch2, make 11tc into ring, slip stitch to join (12sts)
Round 2:   Ch2 then 1tc in same stitch as ch2, 2tc in each stitch all around, join with slip stitch (24sts)
Round 3:   Ch2 then 1tc in same stitch as ch2,  * 1tc in next stitch, 2tc in next stitch repeat from * all around,  join with slip stitch (36sts)
Round 4:   Ch2 then 1tc in same stitch as ch2,  * 1tc in next stitch, 1tc in next stitch , 2tc in next stitch repeat from * all around,  join with slip stitch (48sts)
Round 5:   Ch2, 1tc in each stitch all around, join with slip stitch (48sts)

Easy Childrens Bedsocks

A few days ago a member of my facebook group added a pattern for children's bedsocks - they are so cute! I really love them.
 
She has given me permission to share her pattern here too!!

I have simplified the pattern for beginner knitters, using one or two colours ~ and added Ally Jay's original 3colour version too.
 




Easy Bedsocks               Age 2 – 4 Years

Using 4.5mm  (US size 7) and DK yarn needles cast on 30sts loosely. Leave quite a bit of a tail for sewing up.

Change to 4mm (US size 8) needles and garter st (every row knit) 18 rows using fluffy or contrast yarn if desired

1     2     3     4     5     6     7     8     9     10     11     12     13     14     15     16     17     18

Change to 3.25mm (US size 10) needles and K1 P1 rib 18 rows using main colour yarn.

1     2     3     4     5     6     7     8     9     10     11     12     13     14     15     16     17     18

Change back to size 4mm (US size 8 needles).

K20 turn. Leave the remaining 10sts on a safety pin or holder. Do not cut. Turn

(Top of foot),  K10 turn.

Knit 23 rows garter st.

Ally Jay’s Children’s Bedsocks               Age 2 – 4 Years


First some notes. It may seem at first that the different needle sizes changing back and forth are just an unnecessary amount of fiddling, but believe me it makes a HUGE difference to the finished product.  The bedsocks are started at the top and finish under the foot, so the cast on HAS to be relaxed. I use a crotchet hook to pick up the stitches around the foot as it is easier than trying to hook up the loops with the needle.  For girls, the top cuff can be worked with fluffy yarn and for the boys, I just use a different contrast. (3 different colours used) although you can use as many or few as you like. They are knitted with 8ply (Double Knitting) and size 7, 8 and 10 needles. (4,5mm, 4mm and 3.25mm). They can be worn fully pulled up or folded over.

 

Size 7 needles cast on 30sts loosely. Leave quite a bit of a tail for sewing up.

Change to size 8 needles and garter st (every row knit) 18 rows using fluffy or contrast yarn.

Change to size 10 needles and K1 P1 rib 18 rows using main colour yarn.

Change back to size 8 needles. K20 turn. Leave the remaining 10sts on a safety pin or holder. Do not cut.

Change to second contrast colour (top of foot), K10 turn. Knit 23 rows garter st.

Slip the 10 sts on safety pin onto needle and from the inside edge and using the main colour again, knit to the end of the row (so now you will 10sts in main 10sts in contrast and 10sts in main on your one needle.

K10   pick up 13sts on side of middle panel   k5 on top of toe …use another (size 8) needle to k5 on top of toe (10 sts altogether on top of toe…using the extra needle helps in turning the corner, otherwise the stitches pull badly)   pick up another 13 sts down the other side of the middle panel and then K10 remaining sts.. (56 sts altogether on three needles) You can get rid of that third needle on the very next row when you get to it…it will have done its job of helping you around the corner).

Knit 1 row   ….leave a long tail for sewing under foot and then up to the garter stitch top cuff...sew that with yarn left from there.

Cast off.

 

For age 4 – 6 years…same as above but with these numbers.

Cast on 36sts    garter stitch 18 rows    rib 18 rows (so the same number of rows, just more stitches).

After changing back to the size 8 needles for the foot part Knit 24 then turn and leave 12sts on a safety pin.  The middle contrast is then K12 turn and you knit 27 rows

When you restart the main colour from that pin and have knitted to the end of the row you then     

K12  pick up 15 from side K6 on toe…use the third needle and K6 on toe  pick up and knit 15sts down other side  K12 (66sts altogether)

You then knit 11 rows (again same number of rows, but with 10 more stitches)

The toe shaping is:

Requirements:
DK yarn4mm crochet hook
Pattern:
This pattern is written in UK terminology      
tc = treble crochet        dc = double crochetch = chain
 
Worked in the round
 
Chain 3, join with a slip stitch into a ring
Round 1:   Ch2, make 11tc into ring, slip stitch to join (12sts)
Round 2:   Ch2 then 1tc in same stitch as ch2, 2tc in each stitch all around, join with slip stitch (24sts)
Round 3:   Ch2 then 1tc in same stitch as ch2,  * 1tc in next stitch, 2tc in next stitch repeat from * all around,  join with slip stitch (36sts)
Round 4:   Ch2 then 1tc in same stitch as ch2,  * 1tc in next stitch, 1tc in next stitch , 2tc in next stitch repeat from * all around,  join with slip stitch (48sts)
Round 5:   Ch2, 1tc in each stitch all around, leave last 3sts un-worked, turn (45sts)

(Work should now measure around 5“ in length – you can adjust here)

Cut off main colour yarn, add in contrast colour yarn to bonnet front ~

Begin with the Sleeves (work 2)

Cast on 23sts

Work 4 rows in garter stitch   (knit every row)

Work 24 rows in stocking stitch

The sleeve should now measure about 4” – you can add more rows if required

Next Row:  Cast off 2sts, work to last 2sts, cast off 2sts   (19sts)

Leave these 19 stitches on a spare needle

 

Work the Main Part

Cast on 82sts

Work 4 rows in garter stitch

Work in pattern as follows ~

Tiny Topaz - Premature Baby Sleeper

These little sleepers are for premature babies - I chose a simple style, as I didn't want to overwhelm a delicate tiny baby with too much decoration.
The addition of some really pretty buttons and ribbon is enough to give a special touch.

If you are making these for dolls, then of course you can use any yarn you choose,
 
but if you are making these for hospitals or charity groups  -
please check with them first to find out if these sleepers are suitable - or if there are any special requirements that you should consider.
 
I imagine that this little sleeper may be used by a neonatal unit
to give to the bereaved parents of a pre-term baby who do not have clothes that are small enough to fit.
Very tiny babies that are born too soon are very delicate, so it is important that the sleeper is easy to put on - hence the buttons all the way down.
 
If the gown is to be used in this way then any decoration may be used.
 
Tiny Angel Sizes can be made by using 4ply yarn instead of DK.

 However - if the sleeper is to be used for a premature, small or early baby - you may need to consider important factors .....
 
for example - yarn with metallic thread is not suitable,
and the hospital may have other requirements about the yarn you use.

Although I wrote this pattern over a year ago, I am still enjoying knitting these little dresses.
They really are so sweet !

I recently added premature baby sizes in addition to the original 3months size.

When I made this one in 2 colours I had to play around with the pattern a little to make the lower hem edge look right.

So I thought I would share it with you all.

Knit 5 rows
Cast off knitwise - loosely – (if you find it difficult to do this - use a larger size needle)

Sew up the back seam
Darn away ends
Sew on buttons

Add a little crochet flower if desired

TUFTY - Finger Puppets






TUFTY           Finger Puppet


DK (8ply) yarn
4mm needles




Cast on 12sts


Knit 10 rows


Stocking stitch 8 rows         (1 row knit, 1 row purl)


K2tog, all across row           6sts


P2tog, all across row          3sts


Cut the yarn (leaving a ‘tail’ to use for sewing up)


Put the tail onto a sewing needle - thread through all 3 stitches, pull up tightly.



Sew up the seam.  Darn away ends. 


Using a length of contrasting yarn, add a little face
 
To make the tuft – cut 3 lengths of yarn each around 2” (5cm)
Thread though a sewing needle, and pull though a stitch at the top of the finger puppet.
Tie in a knot, and trim a little if required.

I was asked to make some small items to be sold as part of a fundraising event. I have been knitting and crocheting of course ......  

and I have also been making these ...... 
I thought some of you might like to give them a try too !


Suffolk Puffs

Marianna's Suffolk Puff





These are really easy to make.


To Make a Simple Puff

Start by cutting out a circle of fabric (polyester cotton works well)
Top Tip: Choose a fabric that does not fray easily


Thread some sewing thread / cotton onto a needle and sew a running stitch all around the edge of the circle, with the right side of the fabric facing down
Top Tip:  Use your thread double




Pull the thread so that the circle gathers up





Keep pulling until all of the circle edge is gathered up



Secure the thread by making several small stitches in the centre of the Puff




Add a button




Have fun choosing the fabric and the buttons you use -





To Make a Double Puff


If you want to make a double puff use two circles of different sizes -


I used 4 ½ " for the smaller circle and 7" for the larger circle


Top Tip: If you do want to use a fabric that frays easily - cut the circle a little bigger and fold in a small hem as you are sewing the row of running stitch.


Double Suffolk Puff










These sweet little Suffolk Puffs can be used as brooches by adding a little safety pin, or they can be added to hair clips or bands. Or added as decoration to all manner of items ~ cushions, bags, aprons, hats ...........




Add lace to make a rosette .......

Gauge:


22sts = 4” (10cm)


Measurements:


Width:                                 12”  (30.5cm)


Length:                               6½ “ (17cm)


Sleeve length:                   4” (10cm)


 
JACKET


Begin with the Sleeves (work 2)


Cast on 23sts


Knit 4 rows
5th Row                Knit
6th Row               S1, purl to last st, k1


Repeat the last 2 rows until the sleeve measures about 4”


Next Row:  Cast off 2sts, knit to last 2sts, cast off 2sts   (19sts)


Leave these 19 stitches on a spare needle, or stitch holder




Work the Main Part


Cast on 66sts


Work 4 rows in garter stitch   (knit every row)


5thRow:               S1, knit across row


6th Row:               S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4


7th Row:               S1, k3, * k2, p2, rep from * to last 6sts, k6


8th Row:               S1, k3, * p2, k2, rep from * to last 2sts, k2


9th Row:               S1, knit across row


10th Row:            S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4


Repeat the last 6 rows three times more  


29th Row:            S1, knit 15sts, cast off 4sts, knit 25sts, cast off 4sts, k15sts
Next Row:  S1, k3, p12, purl across 19sts from the first sleeve, purl 26sts from the back, purl 19sts from the second sleeve, purl 12sts from left front, k4                          (96sts)




Work the Yoke


1st Row:               S1, k2tog, yrn, k1, (makes a buttonhole), knit to end
2nd Row:              S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4

6th Row:        S1, purl to last st, k1



7th Row:        S1, k2, * p2, k2, rep from * to last st, k1

8th Row:        S1, * p2, k2, rep from * to last 3sts, p2, k1


9thRow:        S1, knit across row


10thRow:      S1, purl to last st, k1
Repeat the last 6 rows twice more  

Shape Top ~
Next Row:      *K3, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (29sts)
Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1
Next Row:      *K2, k2tog, repeat from * to last st, k1               (22sts)
Next Row:      S1, purl to last st, k1

Cut the yarn leaving a ‘tail’.
With a yarn needle, pull the yarn through all the remaining loops and secure

Test Knitters

I have now shared over 200 free patterns - and I still have loads of ideas for more designs!

 Many of you lovely readers ask for bigger (and smaller) sizes of my patterns.
 I can write patterns faster than I can test them! And that really slows me down.

I don't want to publish patterns with errors - that is so frustrating for those who follow the patterns ..... So I decided to try asking some lovely members of my fb group if anyone would test knit for me. I was overwhelmed by the response!
Over 100 people volunteered!  


I sent out instructions for bigger sizes of 'Jack & Jill' to 24 knitters.

And here is the result ~

I listened to the comments ~ all in all not too bad !
  • I had mis-numbered a couple of rows in the larger size
  • Several knitters suggested the neck was too wide
  • The sleeves were a little long on the larger size
It has all been a great learning curve. I have altered the instructions to take on board the comments so far .......and I really want to say a massive thank you to everyone who got involved. I really appreciate your help and support.
